Why travel books?

Bring on Call of the Wild, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Bill Bryson, Into Thin Air, Into the Wild.

By using those tactics on books I wanted to read outside of school, I improved my reading comprehension overall. (No more 17s.)

It’s no wonder that when adulthood came calling, I escaped into travel again. This time by becoming a small ship cruise director, then a travel marketer, and ultimately an expedition developer for Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic, and EYOS Expeditions. You can see my full exploits at marccappelletti.com.

Now, after 15 years in the travel industry—with a young family and a home base—I’m excited to share a diverse and exciting set of travel memoirs and books that continue to shape my world.

I didn’t know someone could get a 17% on a reading comprehension assessment until I saw the number next to my name on the paper.

Seven…teen. I knew I needed help, and my mom—a reading specialist—was determined to correct whatever was causing the struggle. Without a clear learning disability, we added tactics: highlighting important details and interesting sentences, stopping after each page to mentally summarize what happened. Soon, the real reason for my low scores emerged: I didn’t care about what I was reading. My eyes scanned words while my mind daydreamed about other adventures.

So, what if I combined the two?

What Books Are We Missing?

For this passion project to take off, we had to start with what we knew. Now, we’re in search of more travel books representing more destinations, voices, and perspectives.

We are constantly adding to the collection, but if you have a book (or more) in mind that have moved you, we’d love to know about it.
